While the United Nations’ World Happiness Report — based largely on a single, oddly worded “Cantril Ladder” question about imagining the best possible life — once again crowns Finland the happiest country on Earth, reality is heading south. Literally. By August, more than 500,000 Finns (nearly 10% of the population) have fled their dark, frozen “paradise” for the warmth and sunshine of Spanish beaches.
The report’s methodology, which leans heavily on self-reported life satisfaction, GDP per capita, social support, and other Nordic-friendly metrics, conveniently ignores something as basic as climate, daylight, and the human need for vitamin D. If Finland truly tops the charts of human flourishing, why does such a massive chunk of its population regularly abandon it for Mediterranean winters?
